Barack Obama: The United States Was ‘Founded on Inequality’

Barack Obama asserted that the United States was founded on inequality, despite the Constitution enshrining equality into the law.

Obama said:

You know Brazil just thinks the United States was founded on inequality and we have to admit that even though the United States has a Constitution that says, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,’ At that time not only were blacks excluded, but women were excluded, and people who didn’t own property were excluded.

Obama commented on his understanding of the founding of the United States during the VTEXDAY 2019 conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Wednesday.

Obama said that the Constitution gave America the means of inclusion through Democracy.

“The more people we included, the more successful we became,” he said.

Obama used a basketball analogy to illustrate his point, pointing out that the NBA was better than ever by including more international players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, a Nigerian from Greece who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

“Now he’s one of the best players in the world,” Obama said, pointing out that if the NBA did not include international players, they were leaving talent on the field.

“If you don’t include women, you are leaving talent on the field,” Obama said, saying it was in every country’s interest to “include everyone.”

He admitted that “perfect equality” was difficult to achieve, because of natural talent and work ethic.

“The issue is not perfect equality, the issue is, are those of us who are successful willing to give back enough to provide a ladder of opportunity for others that are coming behind us,” he said.

Obama continued with a discussion about the wealthy, asserting after a family obtained enough money to eat, buy a house, send their kids to college, and take a vacation once in a while, additional financial wealth would not make people happy.

He acknowledged that he now had more money than he ever had in his life, and claimed he could not spend it all if he tried.

“It’s not money that is making me happy, but we teach ourselves that our measure of success is the more we have, the harder we hang onto it, the better we must be, the higher our status is,” he said.

Obama said that the concept of wealth and status in the United States was what made societies less equal.

“We have to redesign our minds to say that we’re at our most powerful and influential when we’re able to help others,” he concluded.

Obama clarified that he still supported the concept of capitalism but called for a “revolution of values” to create a better, more equal society that was more environmentally stable.

“It’s not going to do us much good to have really wonderful apps and great virtual reality when the actual reality of the planet is getting hotter, and the oceans are rising, and the forests are getting cut down, and we can’t breathe,” he said.

Infant, toddler found unharmed at scene of mysterious triple murder

Police in Virginia are searching for answers after a couple and the woman’s teenage son were killed in a mysterious triple murder, while an infant and toddler were found unharmed at the scene, said authorities.

Deputies responding to a wellness check at the home in Fredericksburg on Wednesday morning found the three victims, identified as 39-year-old Michael Coleman, 34-year-old Rachel Ozuna and 14-year-old Kyrrus Ozuna, the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said.

Coleman and Ozuna were a couple while Kyrrus Ozuna was a child of Rachel Ozuna, Capt. Charles Carey, a sheriff’s office spokesman, told ABC News on Friday.

The case was ruled a homicide and it appears the victims died “from a sharp instrument,” according to the sheriff’s office. Murder/suicide has been ruled out, said Carey.

An infant and a toddler were found in the home, alive and unharmed, according to the sheriff’s office.

The toddler and infant are believed to be the children of Michael Coleman and Rachel Ozuna, said Carey.

Carey would not say if the crime was believed to be targeted or if investigators have suspects in mind, but he stressed that there’s no threat to the community.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the case to call the sheriff’s office at 540-582-7115.

Mexico’s President to Donald Trump: America Is for Migrants

Poor people have a right to migrate to the United States, and migrants should not be stopped by force, according to a letter from Mexico’s president to U.S. President Donald Trump.

President López Obrador’s May 30 letter, provided by the Wall Street Journal, claimed a migrant’s “right for justice,” saying:

President Trump. Social problems are not resolved by taxes or coercive measures. How do you transform the country of fraternity for the world’s migrants into a ghetto, a closed space, where migrants are stigmatized, mistreated, persecuted, expelled and the right for justice is canceled to those who tirelessly seek to live free of misery?

The letter also suggested that poor Mexicans have a right to migrate into the United States: “It is worth remembering that, within a short period of time, Mexicans will not need to migrate into the United States and that migration will become optional, not compulsory.”

Obrador’s letter did not formally reject or accept Trump’s demand that Mexico block the huge Central American migration into the United States, nor did it directly denounce Trump’s threat to impose rising tariffs on Mexico.

Instead, it repeatedly claimed poor people have a right to move into the United States.

In one section, the letter appropriates the Statue of Liberty as a supposed symbol of legal migration, saying “The Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.”

In reality, the statue was built to show other nations how America’s Constitution and culture help create a thriving democracy. Since then, many progressives have tried to argue the status is a symbolic invitation to migrants.

Since 1965, when the nation’s immigration laws were loosened, the U.S. population of Mexican-ancestry citizens and illegal immigrants has exploded to 30 million. That huge population delivers about $30 billion in remittances to Mexico each year.

Obrador also suggested that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt endorsed easy migration:

President Roosevelt was a titan of liberties. He proclaimed the four fundamental rights of humankind before anyone else: the right to freedom of speech, the right to freedom of religion, the right to live free from fear, and the right to live free from misery.

Additionally, Obrador argued that “universal justice” will triumph over national borders, saying:

With all due respect, even though you have the right to express it, the slogan “America First” is a fallacy because until the end of time, even over national borders, universal justice and fraternity will prevail.

Nothing by force, everything by reason and Law!

In the United States, many establishment figures also assert that Americans’ homeland is a nation of and for immigrants, not a homeland for 280 million America-born citizens and their children. In 2018, former GOP Gov. Nikki Haley told an Indian audience, “The one thing about America and what I have always loved is America is a country of immigrants. It’s the fabric of America to have multiple cultures. Multiple populations. Multiple heritages that do come into America that make it what it is.”

The second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin declared in February 2018 that “rejecting the notion that we are a nation of immigrants [is] to deny our birthright as a nation … to really defy who we are, what we are and what we will be.” Also, he declared, “We have a diverse nation, and that is our strength as far as I’m concerned.”

Progressives also insist that Americans must not favor their people, children, ideas, and traditions. In November 2014, for example, former President Barack Obama told cheering supporters:

Sometimes we get attached to our particular tribe, our particular race, our particular religion, and then we start treating other folks differently. And that, sometimes, has been a bottleneck to how we think about immigration.  If you look at the history of immigration in this country, each successive wave, there have been periods where the folks who were already here suddenly say, ‘Well, I don’t want those folks’ — even though the only people who have the right to say that are some Native Americans.

In contrast, Trump has repeatedly argued that America is for Americans. In his May 30 letter announcing the new tariff threat, he said:

As everyone knows, the United States of America has been invaded by hundreds of thousands of people coming through Mexico and entering our country illegally. This sustained influx of illegal aliens has profound consequences on every aspect of our national life—overwhelming our schools, overcrowding our hospitals, draining our welfare system, and causing untold amounts of crime. Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illegal drugs and narcotics of all kinds are pouring across the Southern Border and directly into our communities. Thousands of innocent lives are taken every year as a result of this lawless chaos. It must end NOW!

The current state of affairs is profoundly unfair to the American taxpayer, who bears the extraordinary financial cost imposed by large-scale illegal migration. Even worse is the terrible and preventable loss of human life. Some of the most deadly and vicious gangs on the planet operate just across our border and terrorize innocent communities.

For years, Mexico has not treated us fairly—but we are now asserting our rights as a sovereign Nation.

The United States is a great country that can no longer be exploited due to its foolish and irresponsible immigration laws. For the sake of our people, and for the sake of our future, these horrendous laws must be changed now.

As President of the United States, my highest duty is the defense of the country and its citizens. A nation without borders is not a nation at all. I will not stand by and allow our sovereignty to be eroded, our laws to be trampled, or our borders to be disrespected anymore.

Immigration Numbers

Each year, approximately four million young Americans join the workforce after graduating from high school or university.

But the federal government then imports about 1.1 million legal immigrants and refreshes a resident population of roughly 1.5 million white-collar visa workers — including about one million H-1B workers — and approximately 500,000 blue-collar visa workers.

The government also prints out more than one million work permits for foreigners, tolerates about eight million illegal workers, and does not punish companies for employing the hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants who sneak across the border or overstay their legal visas each year.

This policy of inflating the labor supply stimulates economic growth for investors because it ensures that employers do not have to compete for American workers by offering higher wages and better working conditions.

This policy of deflating wages by flooding the market with cheap, foreign, white-collar graduates and blue-collar labor also shifts enormous wealth from young employees towards older investors, even as it also widens wealth gaps, reduces high-tech investment, increases state and local tax burdens, and hurts children’s schools and college educations.

The economic policy also pushes Americans away from high-tech careers and sidelines millions of marginalized Americans, including many who are now struggling with fentanyl addictions. The labor policy furthermore moves business investment and wealth from the Heartland to the coastal citiesexplodes rents and housing costs, shrivels real estate values in the Midwest, and rewards investors for creating low-tech, labor-intensive workplaces.

Gavin Newsom: We Welcome Women to California to Have Abortions

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a proclamation on Friday welcoming women to travel to California from other states “to fully exercise their reproductive rights.”

Newsom’s proclamation was intended as a response to pro-life laws that have been enacted recently in conservative states, which he called “extreme laws that violate the fundamental rights of women.” Liberal states have also enacted laws that end all restrictions on abortion, including partial-birth and late-term abortions. The rush to legislate coincides with renewed anticipation that the Supreme Court might overturn the Roe v. Wade precedent, now that the arrival of Justice Brett Kavanuagh means that it has a 5-4 conservative majority.

The proclamation largely reiterates California’s own existing laws protecting abortion as “reproductive freedom,” which he described as “a fundamental right for all Californians.”

Newsom also joined in a joint letter with Oregon Governor Kate Brown and Washington Governor Jay Inslee (who is also running for president) urging other states “to strengthen reproductive health laws.”

The letter reads, in part:

In the absence of federal leadership on this issue, states must step up and put in place their own protections – both in statute and in their state constitutions, and through the expansion of family planning and education – to defend every American’s right to reproductive freedom. … Roe is settled law, but newly enacted and clearly unconstitutional laws in a handful of states compel our states to act now to reaffirm longstanding commitments to safeguard the fundamental rights of women.

The word “child” does not appear in the letter, but the proclamation declares that California protects “the fundamental right to choose to bear a child or to choose and to obtain an abortion.”

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

Goals from Spurs & Liverpool’s Champions League stars

BBC coverage

How to follow:
Listen on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website

Hundreds of extra flights have taken off from the UK, an estimated 70,000 fans are descending on Madrid – and two managers without a trophy to their name at their current sides joked easily with reporters as they prepare to compete for the biggest prize in club football.

Tottenham and Liverpool meet in the first all-English Champions League final since 2008 when they face each other in the Spanish capital on Saturday.

Their fans will share 33,226 tickets for the final, which takes place in the 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano stadium, although many more will travel in the hope of finding a ticket, or just to soak up the occasion.

The Reds, who lost to Real Madrid in last year’s final, finished two places and 26 points above Spurs in the Premier League.

Their style of play has been much praised this season, and their 97 points and one defeat are English records for a team finishing runners-up in the top flight.

But they have not won anything since manager Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in 2015 – and the German has lost his last six finals, including the Champions League final in 2013 with Borussia Dortmund and last year with Liverpool.

“All the circumstances were different, the teams were different,” said Klopp on Friday. “If I were the reason for losing six finals then everyone needs to worry. Last year was a world-class goal and two strange goals we normally don’t concede which defeated us.

“My career so far is not unlucky. I haven’t a problem with my career. My wife always asks me when the final game of the season is because since 2012, apart from 2017, my teams have been in finals.

“I don’t see myself as a loser and we would have a problem if I did.”

Liverpool have won the European Cup or Champions League five times, most recently in 2005. They have twice been finalists since then – beaten in 2007 by AC Milan and last year by Real.

In contrast this is Spurs’ first ever final of the premier European club competition. And they have not won any trophy for the past 11 years, with their most recent silverware the 2008 League Cup.

Former Espanyol and Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is looking for the first trophy of his managerial career and has hinted he could leave and return to his native Argentina if he achieves it.

Pochettino has suggested the way the club is currently run needs to change. Spurs have not signed a single player since semi-final hero Lucas Moura in 31 January 2018.

I’m much calmer than I used to be – Klopp speaks to BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent

In Friday’s pre-match news conference, he said: “Our team became very robust from the start of the season, 10 months ago.

“At that time we couldn’t bring in new players. As we couldn’t, we decided not to sell anybody. We sold Mousa Dembele in January to China because it was his dream.

“We haven’t been able to play in our new stadium; we had to play in Wembley until a couple of months ago.

“We have come to the crucial part of the season and all of that has made us strong. We have had to overcome those difficulties.”

This is the second of two all-English European finals in a week, after Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, Azerbaijan on Wednesday to win the Europa League.

The only previous Champions League final to contain two English sides was the 2008 final, when Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties.

Team news – will Kane and Firmino play?

Harry Kane (shooting) took part in Friday’s training session at Atletico Madrid’s ground

The biggest question about the line-ups by some distance is whether Tottenham striker Harry Kane will start.

The England captain, who has scored 24 goals for Spurs this season, says he is “ready to go” after recovering from ligament damage to his left ankle when he slipped in the quarter-final first leg against Manchester City.

Pochettino said on Friday that he had not made any final decision on his starting line-up, with the team due to train that evening.

“It’s difficult, you need to take a decision and tomorrow is another decision,” he said. “We have all the information – we will use every detail to try to win.

“You can use only 11 players from the beginning – that is the most painful situation.”

Klopp says Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit following a groin injury – although he did not confirm whether the Brazilian would start, suggesting he did not want to let Spurs know his line-up if he did not know theirs.

“If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me and I will tell you our line-up as well, so if not then I thought I’d keep at least a few question marks open,” he said.

“But he’s fit, he trains. If nothing happens from the moment he left the plane to now because I didn’t see him since then, then he should be fine.”

Midfielder Naby Keita is definitely ruled out through injury.

How the teams got to Madrid

‘I don’t feel sorry for Ajax’ – Pochettino on Tottenham’s thrilling semi-final

The two sides had equally dramatic routes to the final. Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit. And Lucas Moura scored a second-half hat-trick as Spurs came from 3-0 down on aggregate to beat Ajax on away goals.

Both sides had only narrowly came through their groups, with Liverpool losing all three away games.

Tottenham have come within 20 minutes of being eliminated five times – in each of their final three group games, the quarter-final against Manchester City and against Ajax, when they were seconds away from defeat.

In fact, whoever wins Saturday’s final will have lost more Champions League games in a season (four) than anyone since the current format started in 2003-04. The previous high was AC Milan’s three in 2007.

It is the first final between two non-group winners since 2010 and the first not to feature a team who have won their own league in the 21st century.

Managers both in relaxed mood – view from Spain

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Madrid

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino (left) and captain Hugo Lloris spoke to the media

Klopp and Pochettino took centre stage at the vast Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as the English takeover spread across the city of Madrid.

It is estimated 70,000 fans will be arriving in the Spanish capital, many without tickets but just wanting to be part of the occasion.

Liverpool and Spurs supporters were circling the stadium early on Friday morning in search of an elusive golden ticket, breaking off from their quest from time to time to seek shade from searing temperatures.

The city centre was decorated in the red of Liverpool and white of Spurs as supporters gathered on Plaza Mayor, the centre of Old Madrid, and the Cibeles Fountain, where Real Madrid have brought the Champions League trophy after multiple recent triumphs.

Klopp and Pochettino were both in remarkably relaxed mood before a game that will capture global attention, both in search of a first trophy at Liverpool and Spurs – and with the biggest one in European club football as the prize.

Liverpool’s manager flashed his trademark grin when his recent dismal record in finals was inevitably a point of discussion, while Pochettino’s media briefing offered up one golden moment when the Spurs manager was asked whether he had lost weight.

Pochettino, who admittedly did look like he had shed a few pounds, reacted with an expression of astonishment before standing up and striking a supermodel’s pose.

Then it was down to business and the sight of the recently injured Firmino and Kane taking part in training in the glorious evening sunshine.

What was clear, behind the smiles and the occasional knockabout moments, was the very obvious and huge respect these two formidable managers have for each other, feelings shared by their players.

Liverpool may be favourites but they will not be fooled by that any more than Spurs will feel their hopes are reduced by the tag of underdogs.

The preliminaries are over. This superb Spanish stage is set for the second all-Premier League Champions League final.

How to follow the game

You can listen to the game on BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website and app, with Chris Sutton, Robbie Savage and Sean Dyche all offering their expert opinion.

Live text and radio commentary will begin at 17:00 BST, with fans also able to rate the players on the BBC Sport website.

Fans in the UK can watch the game for free on the BT Sport app, website or Youtube channel without a subscription.

Some fans have had to take to the road to get to Madrid

How many fans are expected in Madrid?

Estimates for how many English fans will be in Madrid on Saturday vary from 70,000 to 100,000.

About 9,000 flights were predicted to take off from the UK on Friday, which would exceed the previous record for flights in a day. Madrid airport is expecting an extra 800 flights this weekend.

Liverpool supporters’ union Spirit of Shankly and the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust issued a joint statement on ticketing, complaining of a “measly allocation from Uefa” for the final – with just under 50% of the stadium’s seats going to fans of the two sides.

The two fan groups called for a cap on ticket pricing, transparency over allocation and protection for fans to stop hotel and flight prices being “forced up”.

Rising flight prices have also attracted scrutiny, with Liverpool Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram tweeting Easyjet to ask why some prices had risen by 683%.

Some fans have decided instead to drive over 1,000 miles (1,600km) to Madrid.

With face-value tickets costing more than £500 for some seats, resale websites have been selling tickets for £5,500. One fan told the BBC that he and his friends had been offered £15,000 for their four £60 tickets.

Uefa has warned fans about a high number of fake tickets being sold on the black market. It says: “Arrests have already been made in a clampdown on bogus tickets. Holders of forged tickets will not be allowed into the stadium.”

The UK government issued official advice to both sets of fans on its website and has warned that “there will be NO live screening of the match in the fan zones or festival areas” in Madrid.

How are people watching in the UK?

Fans staying in England have plenty of choice if they want to watch the game in public.

Spurs are showing the final live at their stadium, which will be open to its full 62,000 capacity and reportedly boasts the largest LED screens in Europe.

Anfield hosted a screening of the final last year but is preparing for Take That, Bon Jovi and Pink concerts in June.

Screenings will instead take place at three venues in Liverpool, catering for a total of 11,500 supporters. They are the Auditorium Liverpool, Space by M&S Bank Arena and the convention centre.

Who is going to win?

Most bookmakers have Liverpool at odds of 1-2 to lift the trophy, with Spurs at about 13-8.

Statisticians Gracenote also make the Reds big favourites. Head of sports analysis Simon Gleave said: “Liverpool are big favourites to win with our Euro Club Index giving the Reds a 70.5% chance of lifting the trophy.

“However, Tottenham’s 29.5% chance of doing so is better than their chance of getting to this final pretty much throughout the second leg of the semi-final tie against Ajax.

“The Spurs Champions League story this season has been remarkable, starting with progress from the group phase after taking just a point from the first three matches and climaxing (so far) with their remarkable second-half comeback in Amsterdam in their last match.

“Tottenham are currently ranked 10th on the Euro Club Index ranking, seven places below third-ranked Liverpool, and will be the lowest ranked Champions League winners since the ECI launched in 2007 if they win.”

Match stats – can Mane score in consecutive finals?

  • Liverpool are playing in their ninth European Cup/Champions League final – more than any other English side. They’ve won the trophy five times, but have lost their past two finals (2007 and 2018).
  • Tottenham are playing in their first ever European Cup/Champions League final. The past five first-time finalists have lost – Chelsea 2008, Arsenal 2006, Monaco 2004, Bayer Leverkusen 2002 and Valencia 2000.
  • The last side to lose consecutive Champions League finals were Valencia in 2000 and 2001.
  • This will be Tottenham’s first European final since the 1984 Uefa Cup. They are looking to become just the third English side to win all three major Uefa tournaments, including the old Cup Winners’ Cup.
  • Liverpool have lost their past four finals since winning the 2012 League Cup. Spurs have lost their past two finals since the 2008 League Cup.
  • Sadio Mane could become the first player to score in back-to-back European Cup finals since Franz Roth with Bayern Munich in 1975 and 1976.
  • No team have conceded more goals in this season’s Champions League than Tottenham (17). Seven of these goals have come in the opening 15 minutes of games.
  • This is Jurgen Klopp’s third major European final with Liverpool – only Bob Paisley (four) has ever reached more with the club.

Bus driver saves little boy running through traffic

A MIlwaukee bus driver went above and beyond her daily route, potentially having averted tragedy for a young boy lost in the middle of a busy intersection.

Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) driver Cecilia Nation-Gardner spotted a 6-year-old boy wandering through traffic while on her route. She pulled into a bus stop, honking the horn and shouting to get the attention of other drivers when she jumped into action.

Nation-Gardner can be seen on video getting out of her bus and darting into the road to grab the child and bring him to safety. She took the boy’s hand, walked him on board her bus and called police.

According to a press released by the MCTS, when officers arrived on scene, they learned the boy has a disability and had wandered away from school. Police were able to reunite the child with his family.

Cyber Defense Summit Announces Hillary Clinton as Keynote Speaker

Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is set to act as the keynote speaker at the upcoming Cyber Defense Summit 2019. Cybersecurity powerhouse FireEye claims that Clinton, despite claiming incompetence with technology, will hold an “intimate Q&A keynote discussion.”

Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and failed 2016 presidential candidate, is scheduled to act as the keynote speaker at the Cyber Defense Summit 2019 according to a report from Fox News. Clinton’s attendance was announced by cybersecurity firm FireEye which wrote in a tweet: “We are pleased to announce that Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will be a featured keynote at our #FireEyeSummit in October! Secretary Clinton will engage in an intimate Q&A keynote discussion.”

The tweeted announcement was met with widespread scorn by commenters:

FireEye’s website states that the event will feature “informative and insightful keynotes from industry thought leaders.” The company further added: “Take this opportunity to share best practices, learn about the latest advancements, and enhance your cyber preparedness.” The event aims to inform executives about the importance of cybersecurity and give security experts more information on how to “mitigate, detect, and respond to cyber attacks.”

Clinton’s attendance comes shortly after comments she made during an event in May in which she blamed Russian cyber-activists for her 2016 election loss, which she says was “stolen” from her. Clinton stated at the event: “I think it’s also critical to understand that, as I’ve been telling candidates who have come to see me, you can run the best campaign, you can even become the nominee, and you can have the election stolen from you.”

One huge scandal that appeared to negatively affect Clinton during the 2016 presidential race was cybersecurity-related; the investigation into Clinton’s private email servers by the former FBI Director James Comey. Clinton denied any wrongdoing in the matter but it was discovered that while acting as Secretary of State, Clinton sent classified material from an unsecured server located in her basement.

After the server was wiped of all data, Clinton and her team faced suspicions of concealing evidence. Clinton attempted to defend herself from accusations by claiming incompetence in tech matters; when asked if her team had wiped the server she replied: “What, like with a cloth or something?” She added: “I don’t know how it works digitally at all.”

Clinton will be the keynote speaker at the Cyber Defense Summit 2019 which takes place starting October 9.

Elina Svitolina column: I hope injury won’t threaten Wimbledon hopes

World number nine Elina Svitolina, who has won 13 singles titles on the WTA Tour, has been writing columns for the BBC Sport website during the French Open.

The 24-year-old Ukrainian lost 6-3 6-3 to 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza in the third round at Roland Garros on Friday.

In her final column, she talks about her concerns a knee injury may disrupt the grass-court season, what went wrong against Spain’s Muguruza, how living in London has led to British habits and paying 12,000 euros (£10,500) for a young Ukrainian player to have surgery on a serious injury.

The hours after being knocked out of a Grand Slam are not the moments to make rash decisions.

But I’ve been managing a knee injury for a while and against Garbine it felt the same.

So maybe I will need an MRI scan on my knee next week and see what is the best option going into the grass-court season.

Of course there is a concern I might not play on the grass at all if a scan shows something really serious.

But, feeling how I feel now, I think I will have enough time to recover for Wimbledon.

Against Garbine it was very tough to keep focus and concentration – maybe it was the lack of matches at the highest level over the past two or three months.

Before Roland Garros I had only played two matches – losing in Madrid and Rome – since the Miami Open in March.

The problem didn’t get any worse in the match against Garbine though, so that is good.

Grass is tricky because you have to be ready for movements which could maybe damage the knee more.

It has not been easy for the past two months. I need to see where I am now and take my time.

I have to speak with my team and speak with doctors about when I should start playing on the grass.

‘I was lost on court’

It is tough to say if Garbine is now the favourite to win Roland Garros but she definitely can play well here – obviously she won here three years ago.

It wasn’t an amazing match but she took her chances and served well when she had to.

I made too many unforced errors and too many poor decisions.

Normally my game is about getting balls back and not making many unforced errors. Normally I’m dictating the point.

But I was a bit lost on court. I didn’t feel so good with the decisions I made.

I hadn’t played since Sunday – when I beat Venus Williams – because my next opponent Kateryna Kozlova pulled out of our match on Wednesday with illness.

It’s tough to say if losing serve five times in the first set and only landing 37% of first serves was down to not playing for so long.

She returned well and I was not concentrating on what I had to do.

I have to go back and analyse and see what I did wrong and move forward.

There is no time to be sad. You have to be ready for the next tournament.

I have to be mentally strong. This is a big part of tennis, getting through these moments.

‘Now I drink tea like the British’

As a top-10 player, I have the privilege of being allowed to practise at Wimbledon early so – injury permitting – I can start playing on the grass in plenty of time.

At the moment I am scheduled to play Birmingham and Eastbourne before Wimbledon, but it depends on my health.

I used to live in London and still have an apartment there so I enjoy going back.

I love the city and that will be my base for the grass-court season.

I love the parks, the small cafes, the nice people and the atmosphere. I enjoy simply walking around and spending time there.

My favourite place is Chelsea, by the harbour, that’s really nice.

And I’ve actually started drinking English tea – with milk. In Ukraine we don’t put milk in tea, we only have green tea.

So that’s the most British thing I’ve learned!

‘I didn’t hesitate to help’

Two weeks ago I heard a 16-year-old Ukrainian player called Daria Lopatetska got injured at a 25k event in Rome and her parents couldn’t afford to pay 12,000 euros (£10,500) for her knee surgery.

As soon as I saw the news, I didn’t hesitate before calling them and offering to pay.

It was important for me to react straight away.

I was sad when I heard because it is a very young age to go through bad injuries. It can damage your future.

I think it is important to help the young generation of Ukrainian players because we can’t afford to lose any future stars.

She was happy that I could help and her parents were very thankful.

It is important to help people when you can and I hope she recovers soon because she is one of Ukraine’s rising stars.
